strange
Few people today take notice or apply any significance to Groundhog Day. This curious occasion on each February 2nd, however, is still acknowledged traditionally yearly by our local and national news broadcasters. This observance, of course, refers back to the legend of the prediction of spring by the behavior of a groundhog. The legend goes like this: As the groundhog emerges on the winter hibernation, he can either see his shadow or not. In case the groundhog sees his shadow, he’ll become frightened and heads returning to hibernation. Therefore, there will be six more weeks of winter based on the legend, in case the groundhog won’t see his shadow, he’ll stay up after which spring is here now to remain. This observance, though appearing to be rather ridiculous actually has roots within the planning of spring renewal activities and the new crops.

This legend in our Groundhog Day got to the usa with the early European settlers. Farmers in France and Germany had always imagined witnessing the awakening for the hibernating animals like a sign of spring. The emergence of hibernating animals each year was a natural indicator and predictor from the coming of spring. In those days there was more of a natural awareness and knowning that the initial instincts and senses of animals had relativity to actual purposes and information which was helpful for humans. When the farmers, of those historic times, observed the behaviors of these hibernating animals, these folks were in a position to plan their spring ground preparation and planting for your new growing season. The groundhogs, bears, or any other hibernating animals, not surprisingly, haven’t caused spring, but instead, their emergence from hibernation served as a symbol of the approaching of spring.

Though we certainly don’t rely on groundhogs or bears anymore to find out our weather, perhaps in a few small way the remembrance of Groundhog Day can help connect our minds and our hearts with the remarkable life cycles we, not just witness, but are a lot a part associated withis inconsistent for every people today.

This remote and strange strategy for weather prediction can be quite foreign to us today. With our modern technological world we’ve satellites, weather balloons and all sorts of manner of weather prediction tools at our disposal. Perhaps we no longer need to notice the natural and instinctual behaviors of animals. Yet, the humble groundhog does not have any of those modern technological tools available; however, this animal, and additionally all the other hibernating animals always apparently get it right.
